Join us for 12 exciting weeks of cooking out of cookbooks. The goal of the cookbook challenge is to utilize our cookbook collections. Based on popularity, we have chosen and voted for 10 awesome cookbooks. Choose 3 or more recipes from the selected cookbook and post your results in the weekly thread. This challenge will last 12 weeks total, 5 weeks of selected cookbooks, 1 week of dessert and/or your choice, 5 more weeks of selected cookbooks then the last week of dessert and/or your choice. You can make, 1 dessert if you like and then choose 2 or more recipes out of any other cookbook or you can skip dessert and just go for any cookbook. If you have these cookbooks, great! If not, check your local library or choose an alternate cookbook. We start January 10.

Here are the weeks and the cookbooks in random order.

January 10 - Appetite for Reduction
January 17 - Veganomicon
January 24 - Urban Vegan
January 31 - Vegan with a Vengeance
February 7 - Eat, Drink & Be Vegan
February 14 - FREE choice week - Choose any cookbook. Dessert cookbook will be Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World or other.
February 21 - 500 Vegan Recipes
February 28 - American Vegan Kitchen
March 7 - Yellow Rose Recipes
March 14 - Viva Vegan
March 21 - Vegan Brunch
March 28 - Final Week! Free choice - choose any cookbook. Dessert cookbook will be Vegan cookies Invade your Cookie Jar or other.

There aren't really any rules other than at the beginning of each week, we will post a thread for the week. You can post your results as well as any pictures. If you have any questions, feel free to post them.

So now go figure out what you are making and create your shopping list!

woo hoo - I'm so excited! I have all but two of the cookbooks. I'm picking my recipes based on trying to lose weight, although I don't mind haveing a meal or two here or there that's a little higher in calories, because it's the average over the week. I try to vary my calories each day.

I'll be participating in any week that involves a cookbook I own (and I'm hoping some kind soul gives me at least one of the four I don't for my birthday). This is going to be fun!
I'm picking my recipes based on trying to lose weight
I am also trying to lose weight, so I'll either be choosing recipes that are reasonably healthy or tweaking other recipes to make them a little healthier (reducing oil, increasing the veggies, etc). Of course, my birthday will be another matter entirely, but I won't be participating in the challenge that week because I don't have the book.

I just posted in the other thread about being bummed since my copy of AFR won't be here until next week...but I guess I could use the first week as my free week and then do AFR the week of 2/14. Would that work? Will there be an alternates thread?

I'm not sure how it was done last time, but I think we'll figure things out. Perhaps an 'other' thread that would encompass weeks 5, 10 and alternates all in 1 bag?

We didn't really have alternates listed last time, but I think a few people did alternate cookbooks a couple weeks. I don't see a problem with doing anything that involves using more cookbook recipes (but still trying to keep within the list that we created).

I only have five of the 10 main cookbooks, so off to the library I go! I hope I can find some of the others.

Can't wait!

If you really want to participate with the book everyone else is doing but don't have it, I think all of these books have the Amazon look inside feature.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that. Come to think of it, I used either this or Google Books for American Vegan Kitchen once.

There are a bunch of recipes available on Amazon's "look inside" and since you can see the table of contents, you might be able to sweet talk someone into emailing you a recipe if it's not available on "look inside" but sounds like something you really want to try.

We would have to start with the one cookbook that's on the way to me but won't be here before the week starts! I guess I'll have to try to sweet talk someone (since the look inside for AFR is all salads, and I don't think I can do a week of salads). Or I could do some of the recipes Isa posted on the blog.

But I'm really excited!

I have two holds ahead of me for AFR, so I might not get it in time, and my library doesn't have Urban Vegan, American Vegan Kitchen, or YRR, so I suggested them for purchase. Hopefully they buy them!

Since AFR is a new book, and a lot of people don't have it yet, maybe it would be wise to move it to a later point in the list and start with a different book. There's no reason to be enslaved by the random order if it's creating a problem that can be avoided. This might be a situation in which to call in a mod to edit that list for us.

I have 3 of the books, my local library has none of them but the library system has a few of them. I'm going to try to find the other elsewhere.

I have most of those cookbooks, if someone doesn't have one on the list I am more than happy to scan and email a few of the recipes from the books. I'll just scan the index pages, then you pick the recipes and I will scan and email those. Sound good?
